First, make sure that the oil-based paint is fully cured (that it was painted at least 30 days ago), before painting over it with Soto's Premium All-In-One House Paint.
Prep properly:
-
Remove artwork, nails, shelves, wall plates, light switch covers and anything else on the surface.
-
Fill nail holes or blemishes with spackle and sand smooth.
-
Cover floors and furniture to protect from drips and paint splatter.
- Remove any residual oil (we recommend cleaning with our Shop Cleaner + Degreaser, which is a more eco-friendly version of TSP, and comes in 5 sophisticated scents, as well as unscented).
- Remove any flaking, peeling, bubbly, and/or distorted paint (oil-based paint tends to peel) with a putty knife or scraper. Note that any compromise in the lower coats will likely still be visible even if it's painted over.
- Sand with 240-grit sandpaper to knock down the gloss and scuff the surface (oil-based paint can be very slick and difficult for the paint to grab onto, since oil and water don't mix).
- [Note: Always wear a dust mask when sanding. If you scrape, sand or remove old paint (pre-1978 homes), you may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. Contact the National Lead Information Hot Line at 1-800-424-LEAD, or log on to www.epa.gov/lead for more info.]
- Remove the dust from sanding by washing the wall, vacuuming the dust, and/or using our tack-cloth.
- Make sure the surface is dry and free from all grease, grime, water, and any other residue before painting.
-
Tape edges with painter’s tape for sharp edges.
Now it's time to paint!
- Shake paint for at least 15 seconds before opening.
-
Remove paint clips by wedging the edge of paint opener or flat screwdriver under clip.
-
Open lid using enclosed paint opener.
-
Stir paint thoroughly using enclosed stir stick.
-
Pour paint into the lower level of the paint tray or bucket with grid.
-
First paint the edges, trim, windows and doors with a 2” angled brush.
-
Roll roller back and forth in paint to evenly coat all sides. Use tray grid to remove excess.
-
Begin painting long, overlapping strokes (use a roller extender to help you reach the hard-to-reach sections). Pick up more paint when strokes become faint.
-
Allow paint to dry 2-4 hours before applying second coat. Use fan to speed up dry time.
-
Between coats, store tools in ziplock bag and place plastic wrap over paint tray.
-
Apply second coat in similar pattern as first, ensuring a uniform finish is achieved.
-
Clean tools immediately with soap and water. Ensure lid is tightly secured. Store in house.
-
Remove roller cover from frame and allow it and the other tools to air dry before storing.
- Let paint dry overnight before re-attaching items to your surface.
-
Once paint is dry, remove tape immediately for clean lines and sharp edges.
